Time Capsule Sealed at New City Library
August 5 -- While construction workers were busy indoors and outdoors putting final touches on the new library building, a group of interested citizens gathered around a small, square hole in the concrete floor at the center of the structure to watch a time capsule being entombed there. The spot will soon be covered with a large round brass-colored lid that notes that the capsule should be opened exactly 50 years from today.
Earlier Librarian Karen Roman displayed the various items that were placed in the capsule, which included copies of today's Daily Journal, plus another recent copy of that paper which featured a large, front-page story about new building. The most recent edition of the Farmington Press and a copy of a Farmington history book published 200 years after the city's founding, plus numerous other items that all said something about Farmington's past and present were also sealed in the time capsule.
The official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Farmington Public Library will be September 23, which is the first day of fall.
Almost everyone attending the ceremony took time to explore the large building, where some workmen were making final adjustments to doors and windows while others were unpacking boxes that contained furniture, fixtures and equipment needed for the library. Among those exploring the large structure was the Farmington Post(note)-Dispatch's cub reporter who recorded the following photos.
