Two Large Building Projects Changing Farmington Skyline
Two large building projects -- Menards and the new high school gymnasium, plus the two new buildings housing a music wing and a science laboratory -- are all giving the west side of town a new look.
The main Menards building seems to be rapidly moving towards completion while lights installed inside the structure indicate that this area is now becoming the focus of attention. Meanwhile, work continues on a separate part of the Menards campus-- a large structure going up on the east side of the main building. Also taking shape are the two main entrances to the store.
Several blocks away to the south at the high school campus, one can't help notice the two new imposing structures racing towards the sky. The largest is the gymnasium that is occupying a part of the campus once used as a parking lot. Progress on that building is somewhat ahead of schedule and may be completed before the end of the year. Once completed, the building will be able to accommodate about 1600 fans compared to 720 in the present gym. Two quite large scoreboards will be located on each end of the gym floor. At one time plans called for the inclusion of a walking track inside the new gym. However, rising costs of the project may delay or eliminate inclusion of this feature in the building.
Meanwhile, a second structure, along the south side of the new gym, will house the music department which will provide much needed space for FHS's ever expanding band. Along side the music building will be an expanded new science center. The outside walls of this project are just now beginning to take shape. All of the projects should be ready by Christmas.
Also under construction is a large new parking lot located to the immediate south of the new gym and music wing. One advantage of this lot is that it should dovetail nicely with the already existing large parking area just across the street at the Centene Center. Thus, together, these parking lots will be able to accommodate overflow parking needs when separate events are held at either facility.
